MEASURING YOUR DOGS NECK

The majority of the collars we make such as martingales and house collars are made to fit over your dogs head.
It is then necessary that you follow the size guide below in order to obtain the correct sized collar for your dog.

Measuring dogs neck.png
  • When measuring for your collar we would advise you to measure your dogs neck using a soft style measuring tape or a piece of string and not measuring a previous collar.

  • Measure Point 1 as shown in the drawing.

  • Then choose a collar size which can fit within the range measured to ensure that the collar will fit correctly.

  1. This is the neck size when measuring for your collar and where it will sit when is relaxed.

  2. This only applies to the martingale style and is only to illustrate where the martingale collar can sit when it’s restrained.

How to fit your Collar - Martingale and House Collar

Information regarding Collars

We would advise, but only if absolutely necessary, that if the collar requires cleaning that the collar is handwashed only.

All materials and metal fittings will react differently to temperatures, detergents and cleaning products which could potentially damage or discolour the collar and fittings.

It is at the customers’ own risk if the collar is cleaned and we, therefore cannot be held accountable for any damage that the cleaning may cause.

Choosing the right collar for my dog

  • Is it the right style for my dog?

We sell 3 main styles of collars:

Martingale - aka Limited Slip collar which contains 2 loops with the smaller of the loops tightening when pulled. The larger loop is fitted over the dogs head then adjusted to fit

Housecollar - Contains one loop which is fitted over the head then tightened .

Side Release -Has a release buckle which means the collar does not have to be fitted over the head.

Check that you have chosen the correct style for the purpose you want it for. i.e don’t want to readjust the collar every time then the side release may be the best option

  • Is it the right Size and Width?

We have collars in various sizes from XS- XXL and in widths of 3/4”, 1”, 1.5” and 2” so there is something for every size of dog.

Firstly the fit has to be correct so when measuring make sure you are using a soft measuring tape or alternatively a piece of string to measure the dogs’ neck (See section on where and how to measure your dogs’ neck for extra help.)

You also may want to double-check that the width of the collar is correct for the size of your dogs’ neck.
This can be achieved by cutting a length of paper to the width you would like and then fitting it around the dogs’ neck.

  • Is it the right Material?

We have many materials that you can choose to get a collar made out of such as Jacquard and Grosgrain ribbons, Harris Tweed, satin and cotton fabrics

We would recommend you choose a suitable material that is going to mean you get the most out of your collar.

It is also worth bearing in mind when choosing a collar that some materials can be more prone to pulling and snagging such as the jacquards and satins and that all material even hard-wearing materials such as Harris Tweed or grosgrain can eventually succumb to wear and tear.

What is the difference between a house collar and a martingale?

A house collar can be used when in the house or when out on walks and is made from one continuous loop.

A martingale is a style of collar that keeps dogs safely on-leash without choking them. Also called limited-slip collars, these are a type of dog collar that can provide more control than a typical collar, and prevent dogs from backing or slipping out. Martingales are made with two loops with the smaller loop tightening when there is tension from the dog pulling.

See our Visual Guide above.
